Cosmo Magazine, A Bit Of History

Cosmopolitan magazine has been in circulation for over a century. Published for the first time in 1886 in the United States, Cosmo was not then the magazine we know it as today. As you would imagine, a fair bit more restraint and reservation was considered appropriate at the time. Starting out as a family magazine, Cosmopolitan Magazine was launched by Schlich and Field and had a department devoted to women with articles on fashion, household decoration, cooking and the care and management of children. The magazine also had a department for the younger members of the family.

For a time, after Schlicht and Field were no longer in business and the company had been bought by John Brisben Walker, new editor ED Walker took over the editorial reins, introducing book reviews, colour illustrations and serials. At this point Cosmopolitan was a literary magazine.

Moving on to 1965 when Helen Gurley Brown became chief editor, Helen remodeled Cosmopolitan and in 1970, Cosmo became a woman's magazine. Focusing more on the lives of young women and publishing articles that openly talked about sexual issues, Helen put Cosmo fast on track to becoming what it is today.

Today, Cosmopolitan magazine has 63 international editions, is printed in 32 languages and is distributed in more than 100 countries. As popular as ever and available in the convenient travel size, Cosmo provides you with a plentiful supply of entertaining and useful content. Helpful advice on health and fitness including health news, Cosmopolitan encourages women to improve areas in their life. The magazine also includes sections on self-improvement and career development.

Like any good woman's magazine, Cosmo provides a nice supply of fancyable men to peer upon and Cosmo is not afraid to be naughty, with sexy real life scandals plus saucy, seductive and sensible relationship advice.

Subscribers can expect a good giggle from regular features such as 'Guy confessions' (men sharing embarrassing and shameful stories) and 'Ask Him Anything', where a male writer answers readers' questions about men and dating.
