Are Base London? Base

in the early 1990's when shoe agent David
Conibere was asked to supply Marc Verona's
retail company with Italian shoes. They
both believed that there was a gap in the
market for what they could offer and in
1995 they launched Base
London
Shoes.
Fifteen years later, their shoes can be
found at more than 800 retailers
throughout the UK and Europe and the
company has a turnover of more then
£16 million. They sell nearly a
million pairs of shoes every year and
their policy of selling excellent shoes
that look and feel just right has meant

Verona and David Conibere were interviewed
about their venture by The Independent in
March 2001. Marc said: "I drifted into
the shoe business. I had a Saturday job
selling shoes while I was at college
studying engineering, and after one summer
holiday I decided I would rather be
selling shoes. I've always been prepared
to take a risk if I believe in something,
such as leaving college to work in a shoe
shop. If you get more risks right than you
get wrong, it's
worthwhile." Base
London exploded onto the scene in 1995
with their iconic 'slacker' moccasin.
David Conibere was still of the opinion
that there was a gap in the market for a
really good formal brand for men. He
wanted to create a cool brand to buy that
offered the sort of exclusivity that the
sports brands like Adidas and Nike were
offering. David
explained where Base London could do
something new in the shoe market:
"Independent retailers continued to
lose market share to the multiple chains
selling own-label footwear. In the end, it
became obvious things were changing. Our
growth has been about clever advertising,
clever promotion and the right product. If
you don't have the right product,
everything else is
